World Spay Day at Pro Pet Fix

In honor of World Spay Day, an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States, Pro Pet Fix in Fullerton will host ¡Ay Chihuahua Fix! to promote spay/neuter as a humane and effective means of reducing the number of animals who are put down in Orange County shelters each year. The event is sponsored by the Orange County SPCA and will take place on Tuesday, February 28 2012, from 7am – 6pm.

More than 31,000 dogs and cats were impounded by Orange County Animal Services last year. Pro Pet Fix's shelter cannot save and support this huge number of accidental litters, strays, and offspring of family pets. As a result, 53% of these animals were euthanized. Spaying and neutering is the only 100% proven way to reduce these numbers and save animals’ lives.

WHY CHIHUAHUAS: Chihuahuas have become very popular in California the last few years, especially in the Latino community. Whenever a dog breed becomes popular, more of them will end up in shelters. Last year 20-25% of the dogs impounded by Orange County Animal Services were Chihuahuas. Many did not make it out alive. While they have a reputation as adorable purse dogs, Chihuahuas can often be aggressive and protective by nature. Many people, particularly in the Latino community, are not aware that spaying and neutering reduces the likelihood of biting, aggression, and roaming. Hopefully this event will raise awareness about the problem.

Pro Pet Fix intends to spay and neuter 40 Chihuahuas. Patients will be dropped off between 7-9am
and returned to their owners from 4-6pm. Surgeries will take place between 9-4. Visitors from the media are encouraged and will be offered tours of the clinic in action.
