Description
Dave Schickling, city water system manager, said a comprehensive water rate study was conducted to determine the appropriate level of revenue required to fund rehabilitation and replacement of the city’s aging water system infrastructure.
“Proper funding of these capital improvement projects will ensure the delivery of reliable and high-quality water to all our customers now and into the future,” he explained.
Schickling said the water rate study concludes the city will need to generate an additional 6 percent in revenue annually over each of the next five years in order to fund necessary capital improvement projects over that same period.
In addition, the projected water supply “pass-through” costs for fiscal 2011-12 will require an additional 1.8 percent increase in charges.
Pass-through costs are related to imported water supplies and pumped ground water charges imposed by the MWD and the Orange County Water District, and any increase in electrical pumping cost, over which the City has no control.
If the council approves the increase it will take effect Aug. 1.
