This tour is a walking tour for urban hikers, meant to show you the great bounty of free and inexpensive happenings in Downtown LA- just a short train away.
We will start at Fullerton Train Station, meeting at 10 AM for the Amtrak to Union Station. We will then take the Red Line one stop to City Hall Station and walk 4 blocks to California Plaza, where our gourmet lunch will be waiting for us at Mendocino Farms, a purveyor of all natural, organic sandwiches and soups. We will bring our box lunches steps away to the plaza's free lunch concert series, featuring The Shoghaken Folk Ensemble, an award-winning traditional Armenian folk group from Eastern Europe. The Shoghaken Folk Ensemble was first invited to the US by world-renowned cellist, Yo Yo Ma to perform at the 2002 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C.
After our great lunch concert, we will take the Angel's Flight, the shortest trolley in the world, down to tour the WPA Murals in the central library. After the library we will walk 6 blocks to the Grammy museum where we will see exhibits on John Lennon, Roy Orbison and Bob Marley. After seeing LA Live and the Grammy Museum, we will catch the Blue Line back to Metro station at 7th and take a historic walking tour of Broadway and 7th Street- the former theatre and shopping districts of the city. You will learn about free historic tours and silent movie nights that you can come back and visit in the future! We will end up at historic Clifton's Cafeteria for dinner on our own and then take the Red Line to the Music Center for a Free Salsa dance lesson. We will then return to Union Station for a tour and then head home on the 8:30 PM train.
This tour is meant for people who can walk (or roll if you have a wheelchair) a good distance. By the end of the day you will be an expert on the wonders of downtown LA- a cheap place to play! So much to do, so little time!
