The Muckenthaler Cultural Center is hosting a gallery opening for "veterano cars" 7:30 p.m. on May 14, with gallery reception at 6:30 p.m. The automobile has a consistent presence in the work of pioneer Chicano artists of Los Angeles. Gilbert “Magu” Lujan, Frank Romero, Carlos Almarez and other veteranos of the movement depict the ubiquitous cars of Los Angeles as nostalgic objects of past decades, colorful customized expressions of East L.A. culture, and as anthropomorphic forms embodying mythic presences in contemporary times.
Featuring artists Frank Romero, Margaret Garcia, David Flury, Wayne Perry, Javier Herrera, Oscar Castillo, Gilbert Lujan, Carlos Almaraz, Judithe Hernandez, Delores Cruz, George Labrada, Robert Tyler, Richard Valdez, John Valadez, Rafa, Wayne Healy, and Michael Fletchner.
