Loh, a Caltech physics graduate, began her career as a performance artist in the mid-1980s with her piano concert “spectacles” which has garnered her wide media coverage. Among her performance credits are “Night of the Grunion,” in which she and the Topanga Symphony played a concerto for spawning fish at midnight on a Malibu beach, and “Spontaneous Demographics,” in which she played piano on the Harbor Freeway in Los Angeles at rush hour.
She has also produced three solo performances: “Mother on Fire,” “Sugar Plum Fairy,” and, for the Kennedy Center, “I Worry.”
A contributing editor to “Atlantic Monthly,” Loh has written four books: “A Year in Van Nuys,” “Depth Takes a Holiday: Essays from Lesser Los Angeles,” “Aliens in America” and “If You Lived Here, You’d be Home by Now.” The last book was chosen by the “Los Angeles Times” as one of the 100 best fiction books of 1998.
She won a “Pushcart Prize” for her short story, “My Father’s Chinese Wives,” which has also been featured in a “Norton Anthology of Short Fiction.”
A regular commentator on National Public Radio, Loh has had two long-running segments on KPPC – “The Loh Life,” which chronicled her experience as a wife and mother, and, more recently, “The Loh Down on Science.”
The final speaker in the 2012 Distinguished Speaker Series will be New York Times bestselling horror author Dean Koontz on May. 6.
